The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory compliance scheme in the UK, derived from Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. The scheme runs in 4 yearly phases with Phase 2 being the latest in 2019.

The scheme involves auditing of organisations over a certain size (more than 250 employees or an annual turnover of 50 Million Euros and an annual balance sheet of 43 Million Euros) at group level and site level. Submissions are made to the Environment Agency by registered Lead Assessors.

The site audits generate recommendations for realistic energy saving opportunities with an indication of the likely cost of implementation, cost saving and ROI.
